“We’ve just got word that state officials will begin making house visits to perform these recollection-editing procedures starting next week.”
David stared at the screen in disbelief. How could people be okay with this?
He sent a clip of a video to his friend, Taysom, with a note:
THIS IS HOW IT STARTS!
Taysom reads and responds in an instant:
BRO, I JUST SAW THIS. SOME PEOPLE IN THE COMMENTS WERE TALKING ABOUT YOU COULD PAY A GUY TO FAKE YOUR DOCUMENTS.
By dinner time, David visited Taysom and talked about what they could do. Through some threads on a local subreddit, they found a seemingly trustable source that pointed them toward a paperboy.
They finally were able to get in contact with the paperboy on Discord. He seemed like the real deal; he was more paranoid about them being cops than they were of him. Taysom suggested they pull the trigger soon to be safe. David was hesitant once they were told it would cost two thousand dollars each. They decided to sleep on it and make a decision tomorrow.
“I mean, bro, do you really think we’ll be on the list anyways? I was watching from a VPN. There’s no way they could know I had seen it. If I didn’t see it, there’s nothing to erase.” David argued when he met up with Taysom the next day.
“Dude, if they want to find you, they will. Plus, I heard they already started in Ottawa, and some people have reported more memories missing than just the one they’re talking about.” Taysom protested.
David thought of his most cherished memories. A greatest-hits reel played through his head. He was convinced. He and Taysom confirmed to meet up with the paperboy later that evening in the parking lot of a closed-down warehouse.
David cashed out his entire savings account and met up with Taysom a few hours later. David clutched the two thousand dollars throughout the entire ride to the warehouse.
When they arrived, David stepped out into the cold night air to greet the silhouette of the paperboy. After some discussion and confirmation of the transaction, David’s heart dropped when the man presented an official government badge. More men appeared from the shadows and approached the vehicle.
And that was just about all that David could remember from that night.
